I just came back last night after a week of 17 hour days doing video at the Maryland State Fireman's Convention in Ocean City. This was apparently, the 116th meeting of the group, and several of the members looked as though they've been to all the meetings. My sense was that this group like so many others has become sclerotic, and unless it shakes off its lethargy it will soon pass from any relevance, if not existence. The prevailing 'meme' seems to be the classic conservative credo: This is the way we've always done things; why should we ever change..?
Well Mr Jones, there is something happening and you haven't got a clue have you? Organizations like this one become an incestuous circle of mutual back slapping, award giving, self aggrandizing, and stubborn resistance to change. The forecast is grim without bold new leadership...and that seems unlikely at best. Where there is no vision, the people shall perish said the prophet, and all that will remain is the faint after taste of salt water taffy. I hope I'm wrong.
More soon.....my cousin Lori and her daughter Smedly arrive tomorrow, so blogging may remain sporadic for two weeks. Bear with me, and go read a book!
